- Hello:
- I'm an American who is able
to read Portuguese, and I have been reading the responses that you've made
to the various questions that you've received about English usage. I agree
with 99% of those responses, but I have to say that I don't agree with
your response regarding the usage of the word ain't. I am a typical,
university-educated American and I know no one who has graduated from university
that uses that word in their everyday speech. On rare occasions we might
quote a well-known line from an old song, it ain't necessarily so,
but otherwise the use of the word is widely considered to be sub-standard
and so unacceptable.
- In other words, while poorly
educated rural people and people from poorer urban districts (of any color)
will use ain't, for all intents and purposes those with university
educations will use isn't instead. Rock music lyricists use ain't
because they think that it makes their songs seem more honest and authentic,
but probably they would not use the word at a restaurant or in a store
or elsewhere in their daily life.
- Sincerely,
- Dale Bricker
Dear Dale,
Thank you very much for
your cooperation. I will immediately revise the answer on the site. Keep
participating.

- I was pleased to receive
such a detailed response from you, but even more so to see what a pleasant
home and family you have, and professional school you run. I was particularly
pleased to read about the emphasis you place (for both teacher and student)
on the idea of cultural exchange.
- From my classroom training
at International House, and my experiences of teaching one-to-one, I have
realised that establishing a positive atmosphere of cultural exchange with
students is of vital importance because it not only enhances the level
of the students’ interest, but it also means that the teacher can learn
too, and break down the traditional (and often very boring) scene of a
dictating teacher at the front of a disinterested classroom.
- During the classroom teaching
I did at International House, we were encouraged to teach in a similar
way to that which you described in your letter. This means that my teaching
method is very student and communication based. I aim to create an environment
in which the students want to learn and are ultimately therefore able to
teach themselves (with a little guidance, of course!). For my part this
means that I must try to be as innovative and flexible as possible, thinking
of topics that will interest the students, and games which will be fun
but simultaneously linguistically useful. In order to do this I have learned
not only that thorough lesson planning is a must, but also the advantages
of always teaching language in context.

- Dear Schütz & Kanomata,
- I was very impressed by
what I read on your web page. Your school's major emphasis is on communication,
teaching students in a way that coincides with natural language acquisition,
in an environment that varies according to their needs. This is precisely
how we learned to teach at UCLA. In fact, almost our entire curriculum
was based on the natural approach and its emphasis on communication in
a friendly environment. The primary use of language is for communication,
and communicating is the way people naturally learn a language. They do
not learn by following a preestablished course of lessons based on rote
memorization and grammar contents. At UCLA we learn how to create the best
environment in which to teach all kinds of students. As you will see in
my resume, I was able to put what I've learned into practice and teach
Brazilian students studying here in the USA.

- Dear friends and fellow
ESL professionals:
- It was with great pleasure
that I discovered your highly interesting homepage detailing your school
in Santa Cruz. In fact, of all the homepages I've perused depicting ESL
businesses, yours is the most informative I've seen.
- I am a native Californian
(San Diego), doing business as a gemologist in Governador Valadares, Minas
for 13 yrs. My Valadarense wife and & I moved here permanently about
3 yrs. ago (just before the Plano Real). Last year I started a private
ESL tutoring service, catering primarily to medical professionals (who
all want to learn English but loathe sitting in classrooms with smartass
adolescents). My ESL background stems from 6 yrs. teaching 8-9 hours/day
at Meyer Language Institute in Bogota & Cali Colombia, many years ago.
I love teaching and communicating. I gather my linguistic educational background
is not as "universitized" as yours, but my life experience, in
learning to love the Hispanic and Portuguese cultures, definitely helps
me in my teaching. I currently am using a 4-prong system including phonetics,
American Streamline (grammar & conversation), a listening course with
tapes, and the New Oxford Picture Dictionary. Some of my students just
want to talk, so I pick up items relating to their professions on the Internet.
Your description of your basic method, using the students' experiences,
interests, etc., intrigues me. Can you share more?
- Love to meet you, ciao for
now...
- P. Damian Quinn/Talisman
Trading Company/Advantage English
Dear Damian,
Thank you for your nice
message. I was flattered.
In our school, we don’t
really stick to any method, plan or course of lessons. We have highly qualified
ESL teachers, always native speakers with both academic and practical knowledge,
give them a blank check, and respect each one’s style. We strongly believe
that language is a result of human interaction. More than any other area
of the curriculum, languages acquisition depends on natural learning methods.
So, we totally rely on the native speaker’s ability and our only recommendation
to our instructors is to build a strong personal relationship with each
student.
As for myself, I use
a combination of audiolinguistic exercises (predominantly with beginners)
with what I call a psycholinguistic approach with intermediate and advanced
students. The audiolinguistic work is based on a set of very well designed
exercises for classroom practice that help students to achieve a strong
basis in sentence formation. Careful study of contrastive analysis and
error analysis, ensure efficiency.

no Caderno 2.

As dicas quanto à gramática do inglês e a boa propaganda
tornaria ela ainda melhor. Mas, de qualquer forma, é um começo
excelente.
