Provided that one has a law major, he can defend himself "pro se".

   Generally the defendant that uses this right when he knows that his case is somewhat simple and easy to solve (the defendant having a degree of certainty of being succesful).

   Rarely I have seen this case, outside the representative that was caught red-handed, he was within a scheme wich could know the votes of his pairs well before everybody else.   Here and there appear some case like that, but I haven´t see many of them.
