This discussion on the use of can or may is very exciting. I just wanted to share some on it too. In fact, school teachers are sarcastic at times because students will get their teachers use of puns. Of course students should ask, "May I go to the restroom?". However, students will bring to class the same informality they find outside class. Therefore, students will say, "Can I go to the restroom?", to which teachers might in fact answer, "I don't know, can you?"; such only shows us teachers are pointing young students to proper use of grammar. An important point to make is to not get too caught up between the use of may or can, because as you guys have pointed out not even grammarianss agree among themselves. |
